Bryce Canyon, Utah. Late afternoon at Sunrise Point. The 'Hoodoo" formations in the upper regions of Bryce (7000-9000 feet in elevation) are composed of a relatively soft Sandstone - laid down in the Inland Sea a few million years ago and raised up by plate tectonics in the stupendous bulge of the Colorado plateau.. Sedimentary banding and bleaching of these formations produce an amazing array of colors from off white to intense orange. Add the orange light of the setting sun, intensified by distance and you have an otherworldly panorama which I have been exploring for close to 40 years.
